AirPods Max beat IFixit teardown with unprecedented score | Digital Trends Spanish
What are AirPods Max made of and how repairable are they? These are the questions that the IFixit repair company tried to reveal, in a disassembly of Apple’s on-ear headphones.
AirPods Max are equipped with two 40mm dynamic drivers, two magnetic ear pads, eight microphones for noise cancellation, and two H1 chips, one for each side.
In December 2020, IFixit had carried out a partial disassembly, which provided an initial idea of its build quality. However, he has now completed the process and the results were amazing.

IFixit gave it a repairability of 6 points out of a maximum of 10. While it might seem like average performance, this is the first time that it has not given an AirPod device a zero.
“We are excited to award the first non-zero repair score to an AirPods device,” said IFixit.
He explained that “despite their complexity and a procedure for opening the earpiece full of strange screws and adhesives, Apple’s first on-ear headphones are quite useful, if you have all the tools and are willing to do a little work.”
He also noted that the ear cushions and headband are “easily removable”, and that the internal parts “remind us more of a mechanical watch than any pair of headphones.”
The company compared the internal components of the AirPods Max to the Bose 700 and Sony WH-1000XM4. According to IFixit, this analysis explains why Apple’s headphones cost more than its competition.
“Sony and Bose charge less, but internally, the AirPods Max components make these extremely capable devices look like toys in comparison,” he said.
