Italy: girl dies after controversial challenge on TikTok | Digital Trends Spanish
The death of a ten-year-old girl in Palermo, Italy, has once again unleashed a wave of criticism of the challenges that young people share on social networks.
Antonella Sicomero died of suffocation after participating in the “fainting challenge” challenge, well known on the social network TikTok.
In this challenge, teens must hold their breath until they pass out, which would lead to strong sensations.
Antonella put a belt around her neck trying to stop breathing for as long as possible, while the sinister challenge was recorded by the camera of her cell phone.
She was found unconscious by her younger sister and transferred to the Palermo Children’s Hospital, where she later died.
The girl’s parents related what happened to the newspaper La Repubblica. “We didn’t know anything. I only knew that Antonella went to TikTok to watch videos. How to imagine that atrocity? That my daughter, my little Antonella, dies in an extreme game of TikTok, I cannot accept it ”, expressed very affected father Angelo Sicomero.
Meanwhile, the death of the minor has prompted an investigation by the Palermo Prosecutor’s Office, for incitement to suicide.
The girl’s phone is also being searched; The researchers want to know if she was invited to participate by someone else or did she record the video for a family member or friend.
For its part, TikTok issued a statement stating that it will collaborate with the authorities during the investigation.
“The safety of the TikTok community is our highest priority, we are at the disposal of the competent authorities to collaborate in any investigation.”
