Look at these beautiful images of lightning from space | Digital Trends Spanish

We are used to the spectacular nature of the images that frequently reach us from the International Space Station (ISS).

In the last record, we can see a beautiful light show that was captured by a sensitive ISS storm search team, while observing the electrical activity of a storm from above.

The video recorded by the Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM) of the European Space Agency, serves to understand how lightning originates and even how storms can distribute greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The most attractive, perhaps, is that it gives us a very interesting view of thunderstorms, from a perspective that we have never seen before.

The video shows a strange phenomenon known as “blue jets,” or blue rays, shooting upward from storm clouds into the higher regions of the stratosphere.

After rapid flashes of light, the so-called “elves” or rings of electrical activity can be seen in the record that explode from a storm high up in the ionosphere.


According to scientists, being able to appreciate this phenomenon is very strange, since it occurs very quickly and detecting them from Earth becomes almost impossible due to the cloudiness.

For the same reason, experts hope that these recordings help to understand what really happens in the upper atmosphere.

“This work is an impressive display of the many new phenomena that ASIM is observing above thunderstorms. It shows that we still have a lot to discover and learn about our Universe, ”said Astrid Orr, Coordinator of Physical Sciences at the European Space Agency.
