Facebook would add a smart watch to gadget catalog | Digital Trends Spanish
Social media giant Facebook could expand its hardware technology catalog in 2022 with the addition of a smartwatch to its offering.
The device would reach the market with functions typical of smart watches, such as monitoring health and physical activity, according to the portal The Information.
However, one of its distinguishing features is that it would have a particular focus on messaging systems through Facebook services, such as WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram.
The watch would also feature independent mobile connectivity, allowing users to do without a smartphone to stay connected.
Although the watch could be equipped with Google’s Wear OS operating system, it is possible that when the market arrives in 2022, it will have one developed by Facebook.
Facebook offensive on hardware
In recent years, Facebook has made efforts to enter the market for technological devices, such as the Oculus virtual reality glasses, and Portal, its line of video calling devices for the home.
However, until now it had not approached the segment of smart watches, which is currently dominated by companies such as Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei and Fitbit, recently acquired by Google.
According to the version of The Information, the arrival in this segment is part of a strategy of Mark Zuckerberg’s company that would aim to control the computing platforms that are located after smartphones.
The announcement of the smart watch comes at a time when Facebook faces tough questions about privacy, so it is likely that these are one of the elements that the company should consider for its development.
