To download movies and shows on Disney Plus
Step 1: Choose the quality of the download
Before the fun, let’s talk about file sizes. If you don’t have enough storage space on your iPhone or Android, Disney Plus includes a variable quality feature that allows you to sacrifice some visual fidelity for a smaller file. Open the Disney Plus app on your phone (iOS, Android) and click on your profile icon at the bottom right. Then navigate to Settings > Download quality. You will find standard, medium and high options; the latter probably won’t offer you a resolution higher than 1080p.
Step 2: Download your content
Since you can watch any Disney Plus title offline, there is no need to research what content is downloadable. The hardest thing about this step is thinking about what you want to see. When you know it, from the movie or program page, tap the download button, located on the far right of the play button, under the title. For shows, you can find a download button in each episode, in case you don’t want the full season.
From there, Disney takes care of the magic. It’s a relatively fast download with a Wi-Fi connection, especially the lower quality files, so you can probably grab dozens of movies during that couple of hours before your flight.
Step 3: Watch the movies and shows you downloaded
Nothing to do but have a good time! An easy way to find your downloads is by tapping on the downloads icon, which is always visible at the bottom right of the Disney Plus app. All your content will be here, organized in order of download. Tap the play button on the image of what you want to see and you’re done. The episodes are displayed a little differently – those are tucked under a single tag, and tapping on it will see all the episodes you’ve downloaded from that show, sorted by season. You can also find these titles through a search. You will know that something is available to be viewed offline if you see a phone icon where the download button would normally be.
How much space do I need?
The amount of storage space that each title consumes depends more than anything on the length and resolution of the video, and with other variables involved in the equation – starting with the quality you have selected – this figure can vary a lot.
We downloaded three movies of similar length and resolution (some of Star wars, which last just over two hours each) to see how each option affected the file size. The Empire Strikes Back at standard quality it weighed 0.92GB for a two hour seven minute archive, while To New Hope at medium quality it required 1.4GB for two hours and four minutes. That is a modest jump compared to Return of the jedi at high quality, which took 5.5GB for two hours and 14 minutes. In terms of programs, a 39-minute episode of The Mandalorian At high quality it occupies 1.5GB, but only 270MB in standard and 424MB in medium. Finally, Avengers: Endgame, with its three hours and a minute, it needs nothing more and nothing less than 7.1GB.
Using this data, you can make an estimate of how much space you would need to store everything you want. You can mix things up, changing the quality setting before starting each download. This would also be a great time to decide whether to only allow downloads when there is a Wi-Fi connection, an option that those with limited data should definitely consider. By default, Disney Plus only downloads over Wi-Fi.
What is available?
As explained above, everything in the Disney Plus catalog can be downloaded to be consumed offline. Whether it’s a full season of The simpsons or all the movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, if it’s on Disney Plus, you can download it.
Unlike other services, Disney Plus is not very strict in terms of restrictions. For starters, you can download the same title on up to 10 different devices at the same time, and you can download whatever you want as many times as you want. The only thing the company asks of you is that you connect to Disney Plus every 30 days.
And how do I delete them?
Sooner or later you will want to free up space to store new things. Whether you want to delete a single title or a bunch at once, Disney Plus makes it easy.
Step 1: To delete a single title
Deleting something from Disney Plus will take a couple of seconds. First look for the content in question by going to the download section, which you can access by tapping the second icon from right to left in the app’s navigation bar. Find what you want to delete and click a phone icon to the right of the title. Choose “remove download” and it will leave your phone forever.
Step 2: To erase everything
If you want to delete more than one, Disney Plus offers you two options. In the same download section, you will see an “edit” button in the upper right corner. Click there and you will see a bunch of boxes appear next to the titles you have. Touch a box to choose it to be deleted. You can mark all your downloads at once using the “select all” button at the top, where the edit button used to be. Tapping it again will release everyone from the titles again. When you’re ready to do justice, tap on the trash can icon in the top right of the Disney Plus app and say goodbye.
Or you can just tap on your profile icon at the bottom right and choose Settings > Delete all downloads to get rid of everything with a single button.
