Design, display and durability

Google’s Pixel 5 falls right in line with Google’s other minimalist phones, with a tiny, punch-hole front camera, slim bezels, and side-by-side display. The back has a Pixel Imprint fingerprint sensor (but not a face unlock) and a dual lens square-format camera module. The Pixel 5 is the most expensive model at $ 200 (in the US) and differs in part with a recycled aluminum body, IP68 water resistance and wireless charging. All of that comes in a heather black or light green cover.

The Pixel 4a 5G, for $ 200 less, has many similarities to the top-of-the-line cell phone – it even has a larger screen, a 6.2-inch panel that makes it the largest screen in the product line. The resolution of the screen is also very similar: the high-end model has 432 pixels per inch while the cheaper model has 413 pixels per inch. The frame, which comes in black or white, is constructed of soft-touch polycarbonate, while the small, perforated-screen front camera is located in the left-hand corner of the screen. The Pixel 4a 5G’s lack of water resistance makes up for it with an “increasingly rare” 3.5mm headphone port.

Although the two devices look alike, the firmer, more luxurious aluminum frame and water resistance of the Pixel 5 give it the upper hand in this category.

Winner: Pixel 5

Performance, battery life and charging

The Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G, with their Snapdragon 765G processors, offer a great deal of power for stable operations. The Pixel 5 outperforms the Pixel 4a 5G with 8GB of RAM versus 6GB, although both offer 128GB of storage. All of this bodes well for longevity for both units.

With the Pixel 5, Google significantly increased the battery capacity to 4,000 mAh and that makes a difference compared to the just 2,800 mAh battery in the Pixel 4a 5G. The flagship phone also offers USB PD technology for 18W wired charging, 10W wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. An Extreme Battery Saver feature channels power to specific apps that you can designate, and Google says this feature can extend battery life up to 48 hours per charge.

The Pixel 4a 5G has somewhat lower battery capacity, but not enough to make a big difference. The cell phone also supports an 18W charge, but unlike the Pixel 5, it does not have wireless charging capability. The Extreme Battery Saver offers similar performance to the Pixel 5.

Cameras

The 12.2-megapixel lens of the Pixel 5’s dual-lens camera system is pretty much standard for the brand, but the second 16MP ultra-wide camera was something to talk about. This unit replaced the telephoto lens of the last generation. If you’re one of those camera-buying cell phone owners, the cheaper Pixel 4a 5G is almost indistinguishable from the more expensive Pixel 5, making it a serious contender. Software features such as HDR + with bracketing exposure, portraits with Night Sight and the new Portrait Light function are the same for both models and can even be used with software updates on older phones. Video recorders have three new stabilization modes – Locked, Active, and Cinematic Pan.

Software and updates

There are no surprises here. Both new phones are equipped with the Pixel version of Android 11 and you will find the same style, making it impossible to choose between one. What about the updates? Google promises updates for three years, bringing owners to at least Android 14. Here they are completely even.

Winner: Tie

Special functions

Both cell phones, without being flashy, offer the same special functions. A new feature called Hold for Me makes the Google Assistant take control for you while you’re in hold, waiting for customer service and alerts you when an agent is on the line. Both also have a number of special features activated by artificial intelligence, including Call Screen.

The Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G are Google’s first 5G phones and offer you faster data speeds for everything from video downloads to streaming gaming on Stadia. However, the Pixel 5 has another neat trick in that it can extend the 5G signal to other devices via a 5G hotspot. The Pixel 5 supports 5G millimeter waves (mmWave) as well as sub-6GHz 5G to offer somewhat faster speeds compared to the LTE standard in most US cities and much faster speeds in heavily populated urban areas. This is especially beneficial for Verizon customers, as the service heavily uses mmWave 5G. In comparison, the 4a 5G only supports the sub-6GHz 5G variation of the protocol. That said, the first steps are still being taken in 5G territory and although 5G capacity may be a guarantee in the future of your cell phone, it may not translate into better network performance for the majority.

Winner: Pixel 5

Price and availability

The Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G are available from the fourth quarter of 2021 through the Google store, both unlocked and with compatibility for the 5G networks of Verizon and Google Fi.

The Pixel 5 is available for $ 699, while the Pixel 4a 5G costs $ 499.

Overall Winner: Pixel 5

If you have an extra $ 200 to spend on a mid-range cell phone, you should go for the Google Pixel 5. Although it shares many key specs with its little brother, the wireless charging, the aluminum design, the 90Hz refresh rate, slightly more RAM. and more extensive 5G coverage justify its price. If you think otherwise, a cheaper alternative like the Pixel 4a 5G might be what you need.
